How to décor with leather furniture
Ahh… so I have been dreading talking about this topic because I’ve been thinking about changing my leather sofas and husband said: “not right now”. We bought them at the same time we bought our home in 2012. They have been with us for 8 YEARS!!!! That’s right, that speaks volumes of durability to me.
I think that, if most people haven’t owned a leather sofa in their lifetime, they definitely know someone who owns one. It seems their timeless look and ease to clean, among other things, help. So, after recognizing so many good things about them, it seems that I might be falling in love with them again. But I have to tell you that there is only one challenge and that is finding how to make the space brighter with such strong furniture.

TIP. They are hypoallergenic so they are great for people who suffer from asthma and allergies.
One of the many things to consider is that it goes almost with any color (talk about an advantage). You can change the décor every season and still have a statement piece. It has a classic look. But my furniture is dark brown so I will definitely try to tone down a little bit. Therefore, I’ll use lighter colors or neutrals (whites, creams, tans, etc.) to brighten the space and diminish the “in your face” leather sofa effect.
When trying to brighten a space I consider these things…
Floor. If you have a dark floor, I would look into a nice lighter rug to make some contrast.
Pillows or throw blankets. They always help to refresh and change the look of any furniture. They always make a room feel cozier. Additionally, it adds texture to the design.
Window treatments. If you have dark furniture, please don’t go for dark window treatments unless you want it to feel smaller. A dark window treatment will stop the natural light from coming into your home. The lighter the color, the better and you don’t have to worry if you decide to change colors in the future.
TIP. Take your window treatments to the ceiling to create an illusion of space and height.
Furniture. Surround the leather sofa with light furniture. It will not only help to balance the room, but it will create the best possible design for your space. Nowadays, people like to mix and match different styles of furniture, but try to do it according to your style to create a cohesive look. Think... tables, accent chairs, entertainment center...
Walls. Don’t forget we are trying to brighten the space because of the dark furniture so I would go with a light color such as white, ivory, LIGHT blue, LIGHT grey. Using dark color walls on an 8ft ceiling will make the room feel smaller, but with a 10ft. ceiling you might be able to get away with it. Use any kind of art to your advantage.
TIP. Mirrors bounce the light and make any room feel bigger.
Finally, lighting. I’m one of those who believe “the more, the merrier” when it comes to light. Any type of light; candles, lamps, sconces, chandelier, ceiling light, etc.
So... LIGHT IT UP!!
Reminder. Every Monday, I’ll have a new post on my blog about different topics. Come back and check it out. Have a good week!!
Blessings,
Zaira
